Gabion Wall

Durable gabion wall for slope protection, retaining and ecological landscaping.

Gabion Wall

Welded gabion walls are rigid cages of galvanized or PVC-coated steel wire with strong corrosion and UV resistance. Filled with natural stones, they are durable, eco-friendly and low-cost for outdoor projects.
They are widely used for river protection, flood control and slope stabilization to prevent erosion. They also serve as landscape retaining walls and fences, and support ecological growth with gaps for plants.
Featuring rigid structure and stable load capacity, welded gabion walls keep a neat shape. Their permeable design ensures high stability. They are easy to install, long-lasting, low-maintenance and cost-effective for construction and landscape use.

Detailed Installation Process for Gabion Wall

The installation of gabion wall requires strict adherence to operational standards and detailed steps to ensure the overall stability, safety and aesthetic appearance of the wall. Below is the expanded and detailed installation process, with in-depth explanations of each step, key points and precautions:

1. Site Preparation & Foundation Leveling

Thorough site preparation guarantees smooth installation of welded gabions. Clear the construction zone of rocks, weeds and debris that disrupt positioning. Level uneven ground with compacted sand or gravel using a level tool.

Mark gabion layout positions with measuring tapes and theodolites per design drawings. Compact the base with a compactor for sufficient load capacity; lay a gravel cushion for drainage and stability. Snap alignment lines to keep the welded gabion wall straight and vertical.

2. Welded Gabion Basket Placement & Assembly

This step determines overall wall stability. Unfold folded welded gabion cages on the flat foundation and inspect welded panels for deformation or broken wires.

Stand up side panels and lock all joints tightly with spiral fasteners or binding wire to form rigid welded boxes. Align cages along marked lines and link adjacent baskets horizontally and vertically as a whole structure.

For multi-layer walls, stagger upper cages by steps to boost load resistance. Adjust each cage square to prevent tilting before stone filling.

3. Stone Filling & Compaction

Use solid, weatherproof stones like granite and basalt matching welded mesh aperture. Place large stones on outer edges and corners for tidy shaping, fill small stones into inner voids layer by layer.

Compact stones manually to cut empty gaps; avoid overfilling to stop welded frame distortion. Construct tall walls in segmented filling to keep balance, ensuring flat stone surface and intact welded mesh.

4. Lid Closing & Tightening

Lid closing and tightening directly affect the structural integrity and service life of the gabion wall. First, after stone filling is completed, cover the top of the gabion basket with the pre-attached lid panel. Use heavy-duty binding wires or spiral connectors to securely fasten the lid to the side frames at intervals of 20–25 cm, ensuring all connections are tight and firm. Connect the lids of adjacent baskets together to enhance overall integration. Pay special attention to tightening the corners and edges to prevent stone spillage or mesh loosening. Double-check all connection points to ensure no gaps or loose wires, which provides reliable protection for long-term use.

5. Alignment & Stability Check

Cover filled welded cages with matching lids. Fix lids to side frames every 20–25 cm with thick binding wire or spiral connectors. Bind lids of neighboring cages together for integrated strength.

Tighten all corner and edge joints thoroughly to avoid stone leakage and loose welded mesh. Double-check every connecting spot with no slack wires left.

6. Site Cleaning & Final Acceptance

Clear leftover stones, wire scraps and construction waste, wipe down welded gabion surfaces for clean visuals.

Full acceptance against design specifications: verify wall size, verticality, filling density and welding joint tightness; check mesh damage and anti-corrosion coating quality, test drainage and stability. Installation finishes only after full qualified inspection; all defects require immediate rework.

Note

During the entire installation process, construction personnel should wear protective equipment (such as safety helmets, gloves and safety shoes) to ensure construction safety. In addition, pay attention to the protection of the gabion mesh surface during installation to avoid damage to the surface treatment layer (such as galvanizing, PVC coating) which may affect the corrosion resistance and service life of the wall.

Core Advantages

  • Good water permeability

Water naturally drains through stone gaps, avoiding huge water pressure buildup that damages retaining structures; effectively reduce flood impact.

  • Eco-friendly

Gaps support grass, vines and other plants growth, creating a natural green landscape. Waste stone and construction waste can be used as fillers to cut resource waste.

  • Easy and fast installation

Pre-produced gabion cages only need simple assembly on site, then fill stones directly. No complex concrete mixing or large mechanical equipment required, saving construction time and labor costs.

  • Low overall cost

Raw stone fillers are cheap and widely available. Minimal later maintenance work greatly reduces long-term engineering investment.

  • Unique aesthetic effect

Natural stone textures create rustic, natural scenery, matching modern, rural and ecological landscape design styles perfectly.
